Kim Shin, of Mill Creek, Wash. continued her steady play in the second qualifying round of the 107th PNGA Women’s Amateur Championship, firing an even-par 72 to claim medalist honors and advancing as the top seed into the match play portion of the event. Shin is the only player to finish the 36-hole qualifying rounds under par, and is also the defending champion of the event. Jessi Gebhardt, of Bellingham, Wash. fired a second consecutive 73 to finish in second place in the qualifying rounds. Shin had defeated Gebhardt in last year’s final match, and the two players will be gunning for a rematch heading into the match play bracket. Anya Tanpinco, the reigning Philippine Amateur champion and the lead er after the first day of qualifying after shooting a 3-under 69, stumbled to an 8-over par 80, but still easily advanced to the match play portion. Tanpinco is playing in the championship because of a Presidential Invitation sent by the PNGA that was also given to five others in the field from the Philippines. Four of her fellow countrywomen fared well – Sarah Jane Ababa, Chihiro Ikeda, Cyna Rodriguez, and Lou Isabelle Manalo – all advancing to match play along with Tanpinco. The PNGA Women’s Amateur Championship consists of 36 holes of stroke play qualifying to determine the 32 contestants who will advance to match play. All matches are single-elimination and contested over 18 holes, with the exception being the 36-hole championship final match. For Results.
