Unaltering Faith

By Joe Thiel, 2007

I think this is a great title for the many players I instruct. The definition of faith is “belief that is not based on seen truth as yet.” The word faithful is defined as “strict or thorough in the performance of one’s duties.” The bible teaches that every man and women’s faith will be tested in all kinds of ways in this short life we lead. A life that doesn’t undergo heart-breaking adversity is rare. This is so true of this special game that we play as well. Many tire and leave the battle way to soon to only later wish they had the insides to have persevered through these difficult times. Many also play this game for all the wrong reasons and can’t deliver past a certain point falling short of their God-gifted talent, later wishing they had learned the right reasons for playing the game. Many of us reflect about all the suffering in the world today and argue why evil things happen to good people. But it’s quite different and certainly not the norm to deal victoriously with all the painful experiences that happen to us personally on and off the golf course. Many run and hide but a few face the adversity thankful for the opportunity to test their spirit in their life and in this most wonderful game ever created. They learn how to gladly push through and become what God intended them to become. What we really need in the teeth of affliction are not plausible explanations of why this and why that, but the ability and gumption to endure without emotional collapse or bitterness. The dogged determination to get better and better as people and players some with the understanding that even they may not seem able to find the necessary fight inside but the faith to know they can overcome any and all circumstances. You need sustaining confidence to believe in your gifts you have been given and the WILL/HEART to follow through even when you don’t want to. An unfaltering faith that can stand strong under golf and life’s greatest pressures.
