Olympian Q & A

Dear Joe, I struggle with my chipping. Do you recommend using just one club to chip with or using different clubs based upon the situation?

Roger Burgher, Seattle

Dear Roger, there have been several wonderful players that have done both of course but the majority of players use multiple clubs/lofts depending on the amount and the slope of the green. Most players will tell you it is a lot easier to play lower lofted running type shots, if there is a lot of green to work with, then it is to fly the ball much further and hope it spins the right amount stopping near the hole.
Try this Roger. Hit several shots with your sand wedge to the front portion of the green and watch them roll out. Next with the exact same effort hit your pitching wedge to the same front portion of the green location and compare the roll out. Do the same thing thru the 7 iron and then you may see how much easier it is to not only control these distances but also notice the consistant spin on the ball.
